In terms of an api, just URL's you can hit that have the word or the color that return xml or json data for that would be pretty much all you'd need. Check out the <a href="http://blog.hexday.com/post/color-api/32" rel="nofollow">API at colourlovers</a> for an example, it's what I'm working on right now for hexday.
